John Kelly: Music & Lyrics

Beautiful Sound

(Words & Music - John Kelly)
Beautiful Sound

I was off up to Dublin
On the 5.49
From Dundalk to Ardee
And all the way around
For to find me a gal
To settle me down
And the rain on the window
Was a beautiful sound

Ma’ always told me
Of sweet Molly Malone
Who seemed quite appealing
To me on my own
As I gazed through the window
I wondered of her face
Would she like me?
Could she love me?
Could I make my case known?

The ride was kinda bumpy
And my heart kinda jumpy
A man who sat opposite
Peered at me through his glasses
He said “Sonny by your face,
You seem kinda nervous”
I said, “Sure wouldn’t you be?”
He became kinda curious

I read on his paper
About the trouble in the North
Hungry men in prison
Hungry by decision
On the bridge on the river
Was the meeting contemplated
Black flags to be flown
And anger demonstrated

I saw her by the courthouse
Standing like an angel
But my heart sank down deeper
And my eyes were a stranger
As she followed with the crowds
My conscience disallowed me
To speak or follow after
From the alleys - still blacker
Echoed soldiers’ laughter

From an alley - a rifle
And a gunshot sent them running
Heaven in the heat
Driven by the beat
But Molly lay still
By the side of the road
She’d fallen I thought
But closer… for the first time
I felt the cold
Oh I felt the cold
Oh I felt the cold
Oh I felt the cold

I was off up to Dublin
On the 5.49
From Dundalk to Ardee
And all the way around
For to find me a gal
To settle me down
And the rain on the window
Was a beautiful sound
